FOULKES, E. C. Excretion and retention of cadmium, zinc, and mercury by rabbit kidney. Am. J. Physiol. 227(6) : 1356-1360. 1974.Mean renal artery-to-vein transit times (Z) of logCd, 65Zn, or zo3Hg were compared to those of Evans blue (EB) and inulin in rabbits. All three klements were fully recovered in venous plasma, where they slightly preceded inulin, although 7 exceeded &. Competition for the injected metals is suggested between circulating plasma protein and fixed endothelial ligands. Upon addition of mercaptoethanol (ME) to the bolus injection, logCd appeared in urine; total recovery in blood and urine dropped to two-thirds of the dose reaching the kidney. Renal retention of the remaining one-third was reduced by 30 yO after ureteral occlusion. Both luminal and peritubular cell membranes thus are involved in Cd uptake, a conclusion in agreement with the previous finding of lesions at those two sites. jn the presence of ME, essentiallyall z*3Hg was retained in the kidney but renal handling of Zn was not affected. The stronger chelator EDTA led to recoveries of logCd in blood and urine approaching those of inulin. These results bear on the role of metal ligands in determining renal excretion and accumulation of heavy metals.

The effect of dietary zinc status on biliary metal excretion of rats.

The effect of dietary zinc status on biliary excretion of zinc, cadmium and mercury administered as a bolus of metal chloride (1 mg metal/kg body weight i.v.) was studied. Female rats were fed a purified diet containing either 9 micrograms/g (low), 45 micrograms/g (adequate) or 1150 micrograms/g (high) zinc for 8 d. Hepatic metallothionein (MT) was similar in low- and adequate-zinc groups, but ...

EDTA Chelation Therapy

This study measured excretion of 11 minerals induced by EDTA chelation therapy in 25 adults (aluminum, cadmium, calcium, chromium, copper, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, zinc). We administered 20 EDTA infusions (3 g, with magnesium and ascorbate) 1 to 2 weeks apart and measured 24-hr urinary excretions of minerals before treatment and after treatments 1, 10, and 20. A modest supplem...

Measurement and distribution of zinc, cadmium, and mercury in human kidney tissue.

Simultaneous analyses of human kidney cortex tissues for zinc, cadmium, and mercury were made by neutron activation combined with either radiochemical separation prior to counting or direct germanium detector gamma spectrometry. For some samples from adults and infants, analyses were made on successive tissue slices from the outer cortex to the inner medulla. Zinc and cadmium show a concentrati...

Simultaneous coexposure to inorganic mercury and cadmium: a study of the renal and hepatic disposition of mercury and cadmium.

This study was designed to evaluate the effects of simultaneous coexposure to inorganic mercury and cadmium on the renal and hepatic disposition of each metal. Dispositional changes were assessed in rats 1 h and 24 h after the coexposure to relatively low doses of the metals (which individually are nonnephrotoxic in rats). The rational for studying mercury and cadmium is that both of these meta...

Simultaneous determination of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc in Infant formula by anodic stripping voltammetry

Determination of trace elements in food is of great importance, as some of them have nutritional significance, whilst others are toxic. Long-term exposure to low levels of toxic metals could be important, especially in relation to children. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DPASV) is applied to simultaneous determination of lead, cadmium, copper and zinc in dry ash infant formula...
